Overall Impression
Having already reviewed Trudy Holland's brilliant cover of "Dreams" by songwriting legends Fleetwood Mac, I very much looked forward to diving into her interpretation of yet another one of their classics, this time the folkloric and thematically poignant "Rhiannon". A piece of songwriting that bears both incredible lyrical depth and emotional intensity, "Rhiannon" is a tune that most certainly requires an incredible amount of conviction and spirit in its performances and I'm glad to say Trudy and her fellow musical cohorts absolutely deliver. Managing to channel the utterly enchanting aura of Stevie Nicks whilst bringing her own distinct vocal prowess and compelling sense of character to the track, Trudy delivers yet another spellbinding performance that captures the raw emotionality and mystique-filled intrigue of the original whilst placing her own commanding artistic stamp on proceedings, ensuring listeners come away fully satisfied.
Strongest Point(s)
It's safe to say that Trudy most definitely serves as the heart and soul of the track and manages to effortlessly channel a deep sense of emotionality and grace into her flawless lyric delivery that proves to be thoroughly enchanting. Not only is her phrasing beautifully crafted, but her control and range allow the lyrics to come across in a way that feels both organic and free-flowing. From the rich textures provided by the delicate vocal layering to the way the lines ebb and flow with such elegance, the vocal performance serves as the song's strong heartbeat. The arrangement, both meticulously crafted and sonically vibrant, provides a slightly more intense experience when compared to the original. Whilst the original felt more subdued and understated, Trudy's version, whilst definitely retaining key elements of the original, definitely edges further into rockier territory, upping the crunch of the guitars and injecting the rhythmic qualities of the arrangement with a bit more vigor, allowing this version to feel distinct and cast a slightly different perspective on the original source material. This is all nicely bundled up in an effective and detailed mix that manages to capture the intricate nuances of both the performances and writing brilliantly.
