GOOD TIME CHARLIE

Overall Impression
Arizona-based recording artist Trudy Holland releases a compelling rendition of Danny O'Keefe's stark reflection on aging, with her intimate version of "Goodtime Charlie's Got the Blues". A study in understated melancholy, this song has been covered by a wide variety of singers who recognized the emotional weight and grounded lyricism of the original. Holland's arrangement features a relaxed tempo and minimal acoustic instrumentation, with guitar, piano, and upright bass supporting her sensitive and vulnerable vocal delivery. Background singers provide rich harmonies, while the piano and acoustic guitar weave a gentle tapestry of sound, serving as the ideal accompaniment for this song that sets out to capture the moment when the illusion of youth begins to fade. Fans of the original will find that Trudy Holland's cover of "Goodtime Charlie's Got the Blues" stays fairly true to previous versions, but adds another layer of expressiveness and deep sentimentality, thanks to her distinctively conversational performance and stripped-down arrangement, distilling the very essence of the work into a sobering track that should appeal to folk and country music fans alike.

Strongest Point(s)
Excellent production, great sounding mix with a nice analog warmth. Fantastic choice of a cover, this has always been recognized to be a "songwriters' song", and has been recorded by some of the greats. Gorgeous arrangement and instrumentation. The lack of percussion really allows this ensemble to breathe and flow organically, with an almost rubato feel. The piano/guitar/bass trio sounds terrific, playing exceptionally tastefully and providing the perfect backing for this tune. The lush backing vocals fill in for any lack of harmonic support. Great vocal performance with a natural vulnerability and intimacy that enhance the subject matter here, adding to the emotional weight of the lyrical content. All in all, this is an incredibly moving version of an underrated classic, and should appeal to folk and country fans in particular. Stellar work, by everyone involved!
